Each person gets a metal tray with two lamb kabobs, some roasted tomatoes, a few slices of cucumber and some raw onions. Big stacks of pita bread are put into the middle of the table for people to help themselves. We each had a salty yogurt drink and a bottle of water to wash it all down. The table is set with two condiments - salt and a sweet mixture of spices that looks like it would be hot chilies but isn't. It turns out that the Iraqis I have met don't like spicy food.
I am sitting beside Masar, one of my morning students.
